I have always been fascinated with jewelry! I have fond memories of sitting on my grandma's lap in church playing with the beaded necklace she had made hanging around her neck. Once I was old enough to figure out how to combine things I was often disassembling an old necklace and making something new with it. A favorite source of components for jewelry was my dad's tackle box, swivels are a fabulous amount of fun.
A few years back a friend had asked me to teach a jewelry making class at our local Dahl Fine Arts Center and I was inspired to renew my love of rocks and beads.
After teaching the occasional class at the Dahl I asked a dear friend to help me start a business; my daughter and a friend coining the name SHAVIQ for us. We were pleasantly surprised at the response to our designs and the jewelry making classes we offered.
We had dreamed of our own store front in our downtown district and 22 months after starting SHAVIQ, that dream materialized thanks to Susan at Merle Normans.
To my surprise after just 10 months in our original location, I had the opportunity to expand the SHAVIQ business again.
Today my SHAVIQ Designs collection resides within the SHAVIQ Studio and Gallery located on St Joseph. I am now surrounded by 22 other artists (and growing) designing in a large historical space downtown. Needless to say, I am having the time of my life!
We still offer jewelry classes, but we've now expanded into art classes, silkscreen printing classes and pottery classes as well.
